Austin, Texas -- SigmaTel, Inc. unveiled the newest member of the Wireless Infrared Communications product family, the STIR4210 USB-to-Infrared Bridge Controller, with both USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and IrDA Fast Infrared (FIR). USB-to-Infrared communication adapters provide wireless connectivity between personal computers and a wide range of IrDA-enabled mobile devices.
The SigmaTel USB-to-Infrared Controllers enable IrDA capability on PCs for easy transfer of data, such as calendar entries, contact information, ring tones, digital audio files, and photos between the PC and mobile devices like cell phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDA).
The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) has established technology standards for infrared communication. IrDA communication standards have been broadly deployed in mobile devices including mobile phones, PDAs, printers, and digital still cameras. IrDA communication is ideal for short-range wireless communication where high performance, low power, and secure communications are important. IrDA estimates that more than half a billion IrDA-enabled devices have been shipped to date.
The STIR4210, with an integrated USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Device Controller, offers increased performance and advanced features. Supporting infrared communication rates up to 4 million bits per second through the IrDA Fast Infrared (FIR) protocol, it is capable of transferring a 3 Mbyte data file in under 10 seconds. The STIR4210 integrates voltage regulators to lower system costs for the manufacturer and is provided in a small footprint package to support the design of miniature adapters. The STIR4210 is supported with drivers for Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
The STIR4210 is currently sampling and is available for $6.35 in quantities of 10k.
