Single-board computer (SBC) maker Concurrent Technologies (Colchester, Essex, England) and VMEbus supplier Thales Computers (Raleigh, North Carolina) are inking an accord to co-develop Pentium M-based VMEbus boards.
The two companies say the boards will be available in commercial, extended-temperature, and ruggedized versions.
Under the terms of the agreement, Concurrent Technologies will be responsible for the design and manufacture of the commercial product lines, and Thales will be responsible for rugged and so-called extended products. Both companies will sell all versions under a cross-distribution agreement.
"This agreement will bring out a product family that will meet the needs of developers, whether they're involved in commercial or defense-oriented products," notes Glen Fawcett, Managing Director of Concurrent Technologies. "The products will be designed to be electronically compatible so you can start development with commercial versions and progress to the rugged versions as necessary. The software will be able to transfer seamlessly from one version to the other."
For its part in the deal, Thales proposes using its patented Ruggedizer technology to transform the commercial version of the board into a ruggedized product.
The company's Ruggedizer is a convection- and conduction-cooled heatsink for SBCs for environmental conditions such as extreme temperature, shock, vibration, and/or humidity. Introduced by Thales back in 1997, it's been recently enhanced and is now available on standard commercial-grade Thales Computers SBCs.
The aim is give OEMs ruggedized off-the-shelf products for harsh environments without modification of the base commercial grade SBC, thus reducing both project cost and time-to-market.
The first commercial products under the Thales/Concurrent agreement are due for release this quarter, with the ruggedized products expected later in the year.
