Atlanta, Ga. Designed to improve on existing protection solutions for telecommunications equipment against power induction, power crosses and lightning strikes, the new WICKMANN ceramic and polymer Polyfuse HVR600 resettable fuses are optimized to provide overcurrent protection for applications that must pass Telcordia GR-1089, UL 60950, and EIA-IS-968 (formerly FCC Pt.68) requirements.
The company said the ceramic HVR600 Series is the industry's first resettable telecom protector based on Ceramic Positive Temperature Coefficient (CPTC) materials. The ceramic-based technology features very low impedance and low power consumption performance when compared to standard polymer-based PPTC protectors.
Unlike the currently available polymer PTCs, the ceramic HVR600 operates
at a lower resistance and exhibits a decreased resistance drift after
tripping as a result of a fault current. This decreased resistance drift
limits potential line imbalances and allows for telecom applications
with increased loop lengths, said the company. The HVR600 will not
ignite with an open flame after a catastrophic fault condition, and will fail in a closed circuit mode. The "fail-safe" feature makes the HVR600 suitable for applications in the field where instant maintenance is not possible.
The company said the CPTC technology is better suited for higher hold currents and operating voltages. Component resistance values are typically lower and trip times are longer.
Both the ceramic and polymer versions are designed to withstand a maximum of 600 Vac power cross condition and to operate continuously at up to 60 Vdc. The devices are available in sorted resistance ranges, narrow resistance bin variances, and pre-tripped for better line balance performance and further noise reduction. They are available with 150 mA and 160 mA hold currents in leaded and lead-free versions. All ratings carry required safety agency approvals from UL and TUV.
The HVR600 Polyfuse devices are packaged on tape and supplied in ammopacks per the EIA-481 standard or in bulk. Pricing starts at $0.25 in OEM quantities.
