El Segundo, Calif. - International Rectifier's 60APU06 and 60EPU06 platinum (Pt) diffused epitaxial diodes are rated at 600 volts and have ultrafast recovery, suiting them to the rectifier stages of industrial switchmode supplies working in the 80- to 200-amp range. Multiple diodes can be placed in parallel for higher current ratings.
"The new diodes are ideal for high-frequency welding machines," said Massimo Carbone, product manager for the Consumer and Industrial Sector Business. "In addition, the high blocking-voltage characteristics expand the applications beyond welding, to include power factor correction circuits, uninterruptible power supplies, induction heaters, anti-parallel diodes in motor control and general-purpose diodes in any high-frequency switching circuit."
The new diodes, which expand the company's discrete FRED Pt portfolio, use the platinum diffusion process to accurately control charge carrier lifetime, thus optimizing system performance. The portfolio now includes devices with 200, 300, 400 and 600-volt blocking voltages, and 8- to 60-amp average current ratings at various speeds. The platinum devices have a "soft" recovery current waveshape to reduce or eliminate the need for snubber components. Forward voltage and recovery charge characteristics (trr = 34ns) are optimized to allow high-current operation at switching frequencies above 50 kHz. Their low forward-voltage drop (1.42 V) reduces conduction losses, and their low reverse-recovery energy reduces switching losses. These devices exhibit low thermal resistance (0.63°K/W max.) and a high allowable junction temperature (175°C max.) and thus can handle 60 amps at 116°C case temperature.
The diodes are priced at $2.65 each for the 60APU06 in a 3-lead TO-247, or the 60EPU06 in a two-lead TO-247, both in 10k quantities. The devices are available now.
