Transtector, a Smiths Interconnect company has developed a complete capability in protecting against the effects of Electro-Magnetic Pulses (EMP) and High Altitude Electro-Magnetic Pulses (HEMP). A leader in the field of silicon avalanche diode technology, Transtector uses a combination of technologies to deliver purpose-built protection for specific communications, defence and aerospace applications. Electro-Magnetic Pulses (EMP) and High Altitude Electro-Magnetic Pulses (HEMP) may be caused by nuclear or non-nuclear means and result in a broadband, high intensity, short-duration burst of electromagnetic energy. These pulses can knock out communications systems, interfere with radio links, destroy micro-circuits and even disable satellites. By combining its knowledge of silicon and other surge suppression technologies with its experience in the fixed wireless broadband arena, Transtector is able to offer solutions that minimise the risk of EMP or HEMP strikes causing damage to sensitive equipment. EMP protection requires the combination of shielding, grounding, filtering and surge protection. One of Transtector's key patented technologies, RASTA (Rectified Advanced Silicon Technology Array) is used in the first stage of any protective solution as a fast-acting element to dissipate the EMP strike. Flex circuit is used to handle low inductance elements, and shielding separates clean and dirty signal elements. Inductive filtering components control noise rejection, and second stage circuitry - based on another patented Transtector technology, Stacked Advanced Silicon Diodes - is used for final signal cleaning. Testing has shown that Transtector protection systems satisfy the requirements of MIL STD 188125.
