Camarillo, Calif. - Semtech Corp.'s SC1486A is a dual synchronous controller, a pin-compatible upgrade of the company's SC1486 for DDR (double data rate) memory, for systems designers specifying DDR2 (higher speed) memory and for those requiring a migration path to DDR2 memory with minimal board changes.
"Higher performance designs are moving to DDR2 memory, but the migration path to this new standard can vary dramatically for each customer," said Eddie Yeow, vice president of the company's Portable Products Group. "We have provided the necessary flexibility in this power controller to help streamline design of their power circuitry."
The SC1486A features a wide input-voltage range (1.8 to 25 V), allowing direct interface with standard battery configurations and AC adapters. It provides two independently programmable output voltages adjustable from 0.5 to 5.5 volts. Thus its first switching regulator can deliver 1.8 volts for the memory chip supply and the second switching regulator can provide a 0.9-volt floating reference to support the DDR2 active termination requirement. The chip also provides a buffered reference output (1.25 volts at 3 mA). Other features include programmable switching frequency (300 to 600kHz), integrated output drivers with "soft" activation to reduce switching noise, and MOSFET (RDS(on)) current sensing for improved efficiency and to reduce external parts count and cost.
The SC1486A, in a TSSOP-28, is available now in production quantities and is priced at $2.32 each in 1,000-piece lots. Users can order the SC1486AITSTR (tin-lead) and the SC1486AITSTRT (lead-free) devices. Volume pricing and delivery quotes, as well as evaluation kits and samples are available.
