Smyrna, Ga. Murata Electronics announced its GRM18 series capacitor using ultra-thin dielectric films. This new capacitor achieves the highest capacitance for ceramic capacitors in its small 0603 case size. Murata's GRM18 series is ideal for applications such as mobile phone handsets, digital audiovisual equipment and personal computers where space is at a premium.
Murata has developed a manufacturing process that enables the use of ultra-thin dielectric layers, reducing the layer thickness to 1.0 micrometer. By utilizing X5R characteristics at a rated voltage of 4V, the GRM18 allows designers the benefit of downsizing using Murata's unique technology. This new technique produces new high dielectric constant ceramic materials, which realize highly reliable ultra-thin films, fine electrodes, submicron particles and tight process controls to ensure the highest quality.
"Murata has recognized the need for smaller monolithic ceramic capacitors with higher capacitance as electronic equipment continues to become smaller and lighter," said Karun Malhotra, capacitor marketing manager for Murata Electronics North America. "The GRM18 series allows designers to achieve high capacitance in applications where space is limited."
The GRM18 series does not contain lead. Murata began mass production of this product in April of this year and is developing additional smaller case sized capacitors with high capacitance through this technology.
Samples are currently available at $0.30 per unit. The current lead time is stock to eight weeks.
