Rectified Advanced Silicon Technology Array (RASTA) technology developed by Smiths Interconnect company, Transtector, is now being used by the company to deliver highly efficient protection solutions for equipment that is likely to experience EMP/HEMP pulses.
Electro-Magnetic Pulses (EMP) and High Altitude Electro-Magnetic Pulses (HEMP) may be caused by nuclear or non-nuclear means and result in a broadband, high intensity, short-duration burst of electromagnetic energy that can cause damage to sensitive electronic systems, including communications, aerospace and defence.
RASTA technology is used as a fast-acting element to dissipate the EMP strike. It is based on advanced silicon avalanche diode technology which offers the fastest response of any of the available surge protection technologies; it also achieves the safest voltage protection level and is non-degrading. RASTA combines patented surface mount avalanche diodes in a super cell, delivering a highly efficient, high current first stage EMP protection element.
Transtector incorporates RASTA elements in custom-built EMP/HEMP surge protection designs that also include other elements - such as flex circuit for low inductance, shielding for clean/dirty signal separation, inductive filtering for noise rejection and second stage clean-up circuitry - to deliver a complete solution. Applications include data communications lines, military vehicles and satellite communications equipment.
