Elan's VPU1655x series PCMCIA/Serial interface chip can easily be configured to interface with SD/MMC memory (SD up to 512 Mbytes) as a result of design enhancements.
Because of Elan's unique VPU architecture this interface function can be run concurrently with the normal Serial/PCMCIA function providing card designers with a useful bonus. The device is creating a lot of interest among CF & PCMCIAcard developers and is already being designed in to some CF GPS receiver cards where simultaneous accessing of map data is now possible whilst in communication mode. The VPU device can interface to a physical SD/MMC card or at the PCB level direct to the SD/MMC chips.
Additionally, the SD/Memory can be configured to appear as a drive letter in the host PC or PDA enabling fast, easy user access to data. Aside from GPS map data storage, potential applications also include database storage for RFID data, and other uses such as the storage of dedicated card security software. Elan provides Application Notes describing the hardware implementation plus driver software for Windows and PPC and backs its VPU with comprehensive engineering support for designers and a full reference design kit containing 20 VPU chips, OrCAD schematics, and an adapter plus RS232 cards for testing in order to assist inspeeding up the initial new product design stages.
