Dallas - Two new series of battery management chips from Texas Instruments, their bqTINY III and bq2501x, bring added functionality and more efficient operation to portable systems powered from a single lithium-ion source. The bqTINY III (or bq2403x) series, an extension to the company's bqTINY II family initially billed as the first single-chip 3-by-3 mm charger for single-cell Li-ion batteries, touts safer, more efficient charging. This linear charger includes high accuracy current and voltage regulation, high-voltage protection, and a dynamic power-path management (DPPM) feature. The DPPM allows the chip to power a smart phone, PDA, MP3 player or digital still camera while independently charging the battery. The chip autonomously selects the USB port or the AC adapter as the power source for the system when either input source is connected. In the absence of input sources, the bqTINY III powers the system from the battery through an integrated power FET. Thus the IC ensures a continuous and uninterrupted flow of power to the system while reducing the number of charge and discharge cycles on the battery. The DPPM feature also allows the system to power up with a defective or fully discharged battery pack.
The second chip, the bq2501x, is billed as the first single-chip charger IC and DC/DC converter, and combines a charger and a 150-mA synchronous DC/DC regulator with 95 percent efficiency to support space-limited portable applications such as Bluetooth headsets and accessories. The bq2501x devices integrate a power FET and current sensor, have reverse blocking protection and include intelligent battery management features such as an automatic sleep mode. Output voltage is either adjustable (bq25010), or fixed at 3.3 volts (bq25011) or at 1.8 volts (bq25012).
The bqTINY III, in a 3.5-by-4.5 mm package, is presently in volume production and is priced at $2.30 each in 1k quantities. The bq2501x family is currently sampling with volume production scheduled for 4Q. The bq2501x, in a 20-pin MLP package (3.5-by-4.5 mm) will be priced at $2.05 each in 1k units.
