Ottawa, Ontario -- SiGe Semiconductor Inc. recently unveiled the RangeCharger SE2534A, a 5-GHz power amplifier module aimed at access points, PCMCIA cards, laptop computers and other client devices that are compliant with the 802.11a WLAN standard.
SiGe's newest RF power amplifier module facilitates cost-reduction redesigns, according to the company. The SE2534A is offered in an industry-standard LGA package that is pin-to-pin compatible with alternative 802.11a power amplifiers. The high integration of the SE2534A allows manufacturers to realize savings by using the SE2534A as a drop-in replacement in their cost-reduction re-designs. The module incorporates a linear three-stage power amplifier, power detector, analog biasing and inter-stage matching circuitry into a matched 5mm x 5mm chip-scale module.
Many wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) system makers in the Asia-Pacific region that are currently using SiGe's 2.4-GHz power amplifiers for the 802.11b/g RF chains in their dual-band solutions are interested in the SE2534A since they can easily migrate to its 5-GHz device without having to make a board layout change, explained Andrew Parolin, SiGe's director of wireless power amplifiers.
The SE2534A provides high linear power, capable of +17 dBm output power with an error vector magnitude (EVM) of less than three percent, enabling Wi-Fi products to maintain high-performance connections over longer distances.
An integrated power detector solves problems associated with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. The power detector adjusts the operating point to accommodate the peak-to-average power ratio, and reduces power consumption accordingly, thus saving power while maintaining performance. Consuming 160 milliamps for +17.5 dBm output power, the SE2534A is suited for WLAN applications.
The RangeCharger SE2534A is the latest addition to SiGe's series of power amplifiers and RF front-end modules for WLAN systems.
The SE2534A is available now for $1.93 in 100K quantities. It comes in a 10-pin LGA package that measures 5x5x1.4-mm.
