We recently reported on a scalable cPCI-based (CompactPCI) single board computer family with high bandwidth specs.
Here's another. Board maker Interactive Circuits and Systems Ltd. (ICS---Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) is debuting its ICS-554D, a DC-coupled version of the company's popular 4-channel ICS-554C A/D PMC module. The ICS-554D's base price starts at about $6,500.
High-Speed Baseband Sampling
The latest ICS-554D builds on the ICS-554C design, but was created for high-speed baseband sampling requirements. As such, it can be used for a variety of communications, radar, and test-and-measurement applications. The DC-coupled inputs are useful for baseband sampling in SDR (software defined radio) implementations.
The new ICS-554D includes up to four A/D converters that sample synchronously at frequencies up to 105 MHz. The use of up to four high-res A/Ds handles acquisition of large bandwidth signals, while retaining signal integrity and providing a large dynamic range. The on-board converters also support channelization, and ICS claims its board can provide the highest channel density.
Large FPGA On-Board
Once digitized, on-board baseband signal processing is performed in a 3-million gate Xilinx Virtex-II XC2V3000 FPGA that's virtually free for user coding. The FPGA needs no ICS control logic.
Pre-defined FPGA cores are also available. These include functions such as FPDP (front panel data port) interfaces, wideband digital down-Converters, and realtime FFT (fast Fourier transform) with power detection and spectral averaging, to name a few.
The module also includes four Graychip GC4016 quad digital down-converters. These can be used for simultaneous down-conversion of up to sixteen FDM (frequency division MUXd) bands.
Performance wise, typical in-system SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) is 67-dB over the full band (50 MHz), and the typical in-system SFDR (spurious-free dynamic range) is greater than 80-dB (for a 50-ohm input impedance option). The system's input impedance is 50 ohms, but you can order optional high-Z (1-Mohm) versions.
The ICS-554D also offers on-board storage and a fast PCI 2.2-compatible 64-bit 66-MHz DMA interface. It also has an uncommitted Pn4 connector for direct data transfer. The Pn4 user-I/O supports LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) for high-speed data transfer.
