Taiyo Yuden has developed two types of 3mm-square low-profile power inductors NR series, going along with the 4mm-square type currently winning plaudits in the marketplace, achieving the industry's highest allowable current among equivalent sizes.
Samples of the NR3010 (3 x 3 x 1.0mm), which is optimized mainly for cell phones, are already available, and mass production is scheduled to begin in October with the volume of 500,000 units per month.
Samples of the NR3015 (3 x 3 x 1.5mm), which is optimum for digital still cameras, are to be shipped beginning in November, with production to start in December.
The sample price is 30 yen each for both types. With mobile equipment becoming ever smaller, industry demand for more compact parts used in these devices is rising. Inductor requirements, for example, include further reductions in size, and a height that does not protrude beyond that of surrounding parts (such as ICs and capacitors), or in other words, a low profile.
In the NR series inductors, a technology offering ultra-fine control of material from the molecular level upward was used to develop a special outer resin covering around the inductor's winding part, to allow a higher current value than other inductors of similar shape.
