QuickLogic Corporation has announced a partnership with Renesas Technology Corp., a leading semiconductor manufacturer for mobile technologies, automobiles and PC/audio visual equipment, to enable low-power solutions for the rapidly expanding WiFi market. The partnership will allow OEM customers, using the popular Renesas embedded SH processor to address the growing number of consumer WiFi applications in the home, office and public places. The solution consists of Renesas Technology's SH processor and a programmable companion bridge from QuickLogic that enables connectivity to miniPCI and Cardbus based WiFi modules or chipsets.
"Our collaboration enables Renesas OEM customers to add broadband capability to embedded systems architected around Renesas Technology SH processors with minimal software development time and engineering risk," stated Kevin Yee, Director of Business Development. "This partnership is about offering the lowest power WiFi solutions in the marketplace for handheld, portable and other power-sensitive consumer appliances."
"Renesas Technology chose to use QuickLogic's QuickPCI family of ESP devices because of low-power consumption, high performance and ease-of-design features offered nowhere else," said Hisao Munakata, Department Manager of System Solution Promotion Department at Renesas Solutions, a subsidiary of Renesas Technology. "QuickLogic provided us with the lowest-power bridge from our SH processor to any miniPCI or Cardbus based WiFi module. This allowed us to leverage all of our existing software development, meet time to market goals within the stringent power-consumption requirements and stay price competitive."
Initial chipsets from the partnership will target wireless voice-over-IP (VoIP), also called VoWLAN, and battery-operated handheld applications that support the IEEE 802.11a/b/g specifications.
QuickPCI FamilyThe QuickPCI family of Embedded Standard Products (ESPs) combines high-performance embedded PCI controllers with ultra-low power, high-speed programmable logic to create a unique system-level solution. Devices in this family are PCI 2.3 Compliant, support Master and Target functions at 32 and 64-bit and up to 66 MHz. For more information on this family, please go to www.quicklogic.com/pci.
