Santa Clara, Calif. Emulation Technology has unveiled its new open-top testing and development sockets and open-top programming adapters for quad flat non-leaded/micro lead-frame (QFN/MLF) packaged devices. Both the sockets and adapters are available in body sizes of 3 x 3 mm to 15 x 15 mm, 8- to 84- pin counts, and lead pitches of 0.50 mm, 0.65 mm, 0.80 mm, 1.27 mm.
In addition to meeting the QFN/MLF package requirements for testing (heat and power), the open-top sockets are suitable for applications that require a socket that takes up a limited amount of space on the PC-board. These include test, burn-in, programming and circuit test and verification applications.
The through-hole socket is mounted to the PC-board using traditional soldering methods, and once connected, the device can be inserted or removed as needed for design or test. The socket is easily actuated by pressing down on the socket frame, triggering miniature clamps inside the socket to hold the device in place. To remove the device, the user presses down on the socket frame and retrieves it from the socket bed. In most cases, using a vacuum pump is the safest way to remove the device, said the company.
Enabling safe and easy access to the device under test, the open-top socket features a contact force of 30 ±5 grams and low inductance of 3 nH. Contact resistance is rated at less than 50 ohms. It provides 5,000 mechanical cycles and operates over a temperature range of -50°C to 150°C.
Using a top-loading, burn-in socket design, the QFN/MLF programming adapter can be used in multiple roles. Signal mapping, for example, allows the adapter to be used for QFN/MLF prototyping, quality and reliability testing. The wire wrap posts on the bottom of the adapter provide additional functionality.
