San Jose, Calif. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. has expanded its Golden DRAGON family of high-performance LEDs with the addition of a new warm-white LED that combines typical LED benefits such as long life, small die size and rugged design with a warm color, in a compact 1.8-mm high package. This new LED may be used in specialty lighting applications such as in car interiors and display cabinets.
OSRAM's Golden DRAGON LEDs delivers a 1- to 2-watt point light source with a high degree of efficiency of 20 lm/W, typically fitting inside a 6 x 7-mm enclosure. Although these LEDs are individually larger in size than conventional LEDs, said the company, six of them would be required to match the lighting intensity of a single Golden DRAGON LED.
In addition, the Golden DRAGON LED is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 100°C, and can withstand frequent temperature changes. The company said it meets the stringent demands of the automotive industry. Life cycles can exceed 20,000 hours, depending on operating and ambient conditions.
The new LED has a warmer color temperature closer to that of incandescent and halogen lamps, which is achieved by changing the product's converter mix, said the company.
The warm-white Golden DRAGON LED is priced at approximately $3.50 each, depending on volume. Samples are available now. Volume production will begin in first quarter 2005.
