AVX recently developed the industry's first 0402 tantalum chip capacitor that offers the highest volumetric efficiency currently available, delivering up to 10 microfarads (μF) in an 0402 case size. Designated the 0402 TACMicrochip series, the chip capacitors are suitable for applications that require high capacitance values and low leakage characteristics such as battery-powered equipment, and medical applications such as heart pacemakers.
According to Bill Millman, technical director for AVX's tantalum products division, the unique construction of the TACMicrochip Series devices eliminates the welded lead frame common in conventional molded tantalum capacitor devices, which significantly increases the space available for the active tantalum element even as the package itself becomes smaller. This enables designers to add higher capacitance value parts to existing circuits, or use the smaller package size to further miniaturize their circuits, he said.
Featuring excellent leakage characteristics, typical specifications for the 0402 TACMicrochip series include high capacitance/voltage (C/V) values for 0402 devices such as 10 μF at 2 V; 4.7 μF at 4V; 2.2 μF at 6.3V; and 1.0 μF at 10 V with maximum equivalent series resistance (ESR) values of 15 ohms at 100 KHz. The devices also exhibit a stable capacitance range from -55°C to 125°C.
The TACMicrochip Series is available in a lead-free version, and features AVX's "soft termination" technology that compensates for the thermal mismatch between components and PC boards, which can often cause solder joint failure in these devices, said the company. The devices are also available in 0603, 0805 and 1206, or standard L, R and A case sizes.
Typical pricing for the 0402 TAC Microchip series ranges from $0.45 to $0.55 in quantities of 10,000. Delivery is four to six weeks. Samples are available immediately.
