MANHASSET, N.Y. Samsung Electronics said Tuesday (Jan. 4) it has developed the largest single-panel active matrix-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display for TVs, measuring 21 inches diagonally and displaying 6.22 million pixels.
Last October, rival LG.Philips LCD demonstrated a 20-inch OLED panel. Last May, Epson had shown a 40-inch OLED display comprised of four diagonal 20-inch low-temperature LCD panels printed with polymer organic electronic luminescence materials.
Although Samsung (Seoul, South Korea) has focused mostly on developing large panels based on liquid crystal display technology, the company, along with LG.Philips and other LCD suppliers, have been hedging their bets by also conducting R&D on OLEDs.
Samsung's OLED display offers brightness of 400 nits, a contrast ratio of 5000:1, color gamut of 75 percent and fast response times, making the product ideal for viewing HD-resolution video images.
The OLED display uses amorphous silicon technology, making it amenable to mass production within Samsung's existing fourth- and fifth-generation TFT-LCD lines.
