Schaumburg, Ill. Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.) Inc. has added a new, ultra-small 0402 case size (1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5 mm) to its popular CFCAP line of super low distortion surface-mount multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC). Designed for high-frequency applications, the company says the CFCAP MLCCs provide a smaller, lower cost, and more reliable alternative to surface-mount plastic film capacitors in an 0603 package.
Use of the company's high-precision multi-layering techniques, combined with a new composition dielectric material, has resulted in a number of performance advantages including higher capacitance values, higher temperature stability and lower equivalent series resistance (ESR).
Available in nine models, the new 0402 MLCCs, depending on the model, offer capacitance values from 1000 pF to 4700 pF with DC voltage ratings of 10 V, 16 V or 25 V. Offering electrical characteristics comparable to the smallest available 0603 film capacitor, the new MLCCs are suitable for use in PLL (phase locked loop) and filter coupling circuits in mobile phones and other ultra-portable devices.
In addition to their size advantage over the 0603 film capacitors, the CFCAP MLCCs offer superior stability against voltage, heat, mechanical shock and other external energy surges, said the company. They also exhibit superior component reliability when compared to SMD plastic film caps due to their stronger thermal shock and mechanical stress withstand capabilities. The CFCAP MLCCs offer higher thermal resistance and a broad operating temperature range of -55°C to 125°C.
In addition, the devices generate minimal noise when subjected to shock, and provide greater stability and higher insulation resistance. Breakdown voltage for the CFCAP series is about 10 ten times better than equivalent size plastic film capacitors.
