MANHASSET, N.Y. AU Optronics Corp. has announced it has successfully produced a 32 in. liquid crystal display TV panel on its new Generation 6 fab that is on target to begin mass production in March.
AU Optronics (Taichung, Taiwan) said the 32 in. panel is the largest LCD out of Taiwan to date. The Gen6 fab, located in Taichung Science Park, has been under construction for the last 18 months and spreads over 48,000 square feet.
The fab handles glass substrates up to 1,500mm x 1,850mm and can optimally cut up to eight 32in. panels, six 37in. panels, or four 40in. panels.
According to analysts, AU Optronics is considered the third largest global supplier of LCD panels with a 13.6 percent market share. But AU, along with other Taiwanese suppliers, is playing catch up to Korea-based Samsung and LG.Philips LCD, the two largest LCD suppliers, as well as several Japanese suppliers.
LG launched a sixth-generation fab in September. Rival Samsung formed a joint venture with Japan-based Sony, called S-LCD Corp., that will launch a seventh-generation LCD fab handling glass substrates 1,870 x 2,200 mm in size the first half of 2005.
Leapfrogging S-LCD, Japan-based Sharp earlier this month announced plans to launch an eight-generation fab able to handle glass up to 2200 x 2400 mm in size, for 45- to 50-in. LCD TV panels.
