Santa Clara, Calif. Emulation Technology, Inc. has announced the availability of the industry's only surface-mount QFN/MLF Quick Lock sockets, which give designers quicker and easier access to a device during design or test. The sockets are also available in through-hole and compression fit mounting styles.
The new test socket design incorporates a unique cover that allows easy and quick access to the device and requires no tools to actuate or secure the lid to the socket base. All three mounting styles of sockets are offered in all grid sizes, and lead and ball pitches of 0.50 mm, 0.65 mm, 0.75 mm and 0.80 mm.
The company said this test socket is ideal for users who are working with ICs that do not
require burn-in testing and who are looking to find ways to reduce testing costs. Providing quick insertion and extraction of packages during the chip screening process, the new sockets provide a contact and retention system life of 10,000 cycles minimum, and individual contact force of 40 grams maximum.
In addition, all of the sockets are easy to mount. The surface-mount Quick Lock sockets provide high mechanical integrity when connected to the board using solder paste and wave solder process. To mount the through-hole Quick Lock socket, the socket's pins are matched up with the PC-board layout, then inserted and hand or wave soldered to attach the socket base to the board.
The solderless compression fit Quick Lock socket style uses an assembly board attached to the socket body, which holds the socket's insert in place. While it doesn't require soldering, it does require two to four tooling holes on the target PC-board to secure the socket with a set of screws. The sockets also provide easy socket closure by actuating the cover's clasp.
Pricing for a 40-pin, 1.00 mm, SMT Quick Lock socket (BPQ-40-ML28-30) is priced at $571.00 each in quantities of 100. Delivery is four weeks. These sockets are eligible for the company's ASAP socket delivery.
