California Micro Devices has introduced the first generation of Praetorian ASIP (Application Specific Integrated Passive) EMI (electromagnetic interference) inductor-based filter arrays, offering superior filter performance combined with robust ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection. With demand surging for advanced multimedia capabilities in wireless handsets, designers are facing new challenges, specifically in clamshell phones where avoiding EMI is especially difficult. Data rates from the processor to the high-resolution display and from the camera module have dramatically increased, creating new EMI filtering and ESD protection issues.
To address these requirements, CMD has developed patent-pending Praetorian process technology. This groundbreaking technology allows the integration of spiral inductors with resistors, capacitors and ESD protection diodes in a single chip design. As a result, CMD's new generation CM1450 and CM1451 Praetorian EMI filters offer high cutoff frequencies, minimal insertion loss, sharp roll-off, excellent signal integrity and greater levels of attenuation at high frequencies.
The CM1450 and CM1451 Praetorian EMI filters with ESD protection are offered in a space saving CSP (chip scale package) form factor. Both products are based on a 5-pole LC filter architecture (15pF-17nH-15pF-17nH-15pF and 10pF-17nH-10pF-17nH-10pF respectively), which attenuate signals by 35dB or better over a frequency range of 800 MHz to 2.7 GHz. For the frequency range of 3 GHz to 6 GHz, the level of attenuation is greater than 30 dB.
These new products are ideal for filtering high-resolution display and camera modules interfaces with data rates between 120 Mbits/s to 160 Mbits/s. In addition, unlike RC filters, LC filters do not significantly degrade signal rise times. They are available in both 6 and 8 channel formats. In addition to filtering, both products also provide ESD protection up to ±15kV contact discharge per IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 specification.
The new Praetorian products demonstrate CMD's commitment to help its customers improve overall system robustness. The industry leading EMI filter performance of the CM1450 and CM1451 address requirements that cannot be met by discrete components or ceramic filters. With these products, CMD has continued to offer best-in-class performance, significant space savings and reduction of the overall cost of ownership.
The CM1450 is currently sampling, and pricing starts at $0.85 each in 1,000 units for the six-channel version. The CM1451 will be sampling later this month. Production for both families is scheduled for second quarter 2005. The standard version of both products is in a lead-free CSP package featuring CMD's OptiGuard coating for increased robustness and durability.
