Norwood, M.A. Analog Devices, Inc introduced the AD8159, which they are calling the industry's only switching device designed specifically to address 10 Gbit Ethernet Attachment Unit Interface (XAUI) port redundancy. The AD8159 is a special-purpose switch configured as a quad multiplexer/demultiplexer, and it supports data rates of up to 3.2 Gbits/s, making it well-suited for the protocols of storage, enterprise, metro and core networking applications, including Fibre Channel, SATA, SONET and Ethernet.
The AD8159 is a departure from current XAUI designs, because switching functions are placed outside of the ASIC, which has the effect of freeing up bandwidth previously dedicated to redundancy.
The AD8159 consists of a two-port multiplexer and a two-port demultiplexer. Each port is a 4-lane link, where each lane operates at up to 3.2 Gbits/s independent of the other lanes. There are a total of 12 differential PECL/CML (positive emitter coupled logic/current mode logic) compatible inputs and 12 differential CML outputs. The operation of this product is optimized for NRZ (non-return to zero) data rates up to 3.2 Gbits/s per lane.
The AD8159 has typical power dissipation of 1 W at +3.3 VDC with output pre-emphasis and input equalization active on all lanes. In addition, one port on the AD8159 allows reversal of transmit and receive pins to allow for greater routing flexibility. Controlled and configured through simple control pins, the AD8159 requires no CPU interface.
The main application of the AD8159 is to support redundancy on both the backplane side and the line interface side. The device has Unicast and Bicast capability, so it can be configured to support either 1+1 or 1:1 redundancy. The AD8159 supports reversing the OUT and IN pins on one of its ports, which will help to connect two ASICs with reversed OUT and IN pinouts. An additional application fit for the AD8159 is testing high speed serial links by duplicating the incoming data and sending it to the destination port and to test equipment simultaneously.
