Menlo Park, Calif. Raychem Circuit Protection, a business unit of Tyco Electronics, says its new PolySwitch TRF600-150 circuit protection devices are now UL recognized to UL 1434 and have passed UL tests for UL497A. In addition, the new devices are compliant with the European Union's RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2002/95/EC that bans or restricts the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDE).
The PolySwitch TRF600-150 devices help protect against current transients that exceed nominal operating voltages of telecommunications lines, and help equipment manufacturers that must comply with the telecom requirements of UL60950 reduce test time and expenses.
These PolySwitch devices meet the UL specification for "Secondary Protectors for Communication Circuits" for telecom and networking applications, and provide resettable overcurrent protection in telephones, fax machines, set-top boxes, security systems, modems, and other electronic equipment that must comply with UL 60950 and TIA-968-A standards.
Upshot: The recognition of these parts by UL, with the additional testing to UL497A that is typically applied to multi-component protection modules, rather than discrete components, permits the integration of these devices without additional module or equipment testing. In addition, the compact size of the PolySwitch TRF600-150 devices enable the development of more densely populated PC-board designs, and permit drop-in replacement for many existing designs.
Marked as an UL-recognized component, the resettable PolySwitch TRF600-150 devices offer a 150 mA hold current, and limit let-through energy to significantly lower levels than traditional lightening-robust fuses that do not interrupt a circuit until the fault currents exceed 1 amp. This permits the use of smaller, less expensive, and lower-power-handling circuit components. In addition to interrupting potentially damaging power faults, the PolySwitch TRF600-150 devices are robust to ITU-T K.20/21/45 lightning surges, making them suitable for secondary protection of telecom and networking equipment designed for use around the world.
Available in tape and reel packaging or in bulk quantities, the TRF600-150 is priced at $0.30 in quantities of 100,000. Delivery is four to six weeks. Samples are available now.
