Sunnyvale, Calif. Oki Semiconductor claims having the smallest packaged ARM processor as part of its introduction of two new series of low-power ARM7-based general-purpose microcontrollers. The units are available in a wafer-level chip size package that is less than 25 square millimeters.
The MCUs provide system designers with the combination of a small footprint, low power requirements, legacy 8- and 16-bit support, and a broad set of serial communications interfaces that can be easily integrated into a wide array of applications, according to Oki.
The miniature size of the 406x WCSP takes advantage of Oki's packaging technology by providing a packaged part with a footprint no larger than the die itself, enabling designers to develop extremely compact consumer, industrial and medical devices.
The new 406x series along with the companion ML67405x (405x) series of MCUs offer the combination of communications support, including Multi-Master I2C, SPI, I2S, and 9-bit UARTs enabling communications with legacy 8-bit MCU devices. The 405x series adds an external bus or 68 GPIO pins to the 406x series for use in systems that require extra functionality.
Based on a 32-bit ARM7TDMI MCU core running at 33 MHz, Oki's 405x and 406x series include MCUs ranging from 64K to 128K of 32-bit zero-wait state flash memory and 16K of SRAM. The 405x and 406x offer power modes that meet a broad set of system requirements for portable and fixed products. Running on a 2.5V core power supply, the two devices enable designers to take advantage of low power, low system cost, and readily available 2.5V parts. The 405x and 406x MCUs can run from single or dual power supplies. Package options are 64 or 144 pin LQFP, an 84 pin LFBGA or 64 pin WCSP.
Engineering samples and a demo kit for the 405x and 406x Advantage Microcontroller series will be available in the second quarter of 2005. In lots of 10,000 pieces, the ML67Q4060 LQFP is priced at $3.98 while the ML67Q4060 WCSP goes for $4.53.
