Corpus Christi, Tex. TT Electronics IRC Advanced Film Division has developed a series of high-speed line terminators capable of operating at frequencies up to 40 GHz, and provide near-ideal termination performance at 50 and 75-ohms for high-frequency digital transmission lines.
Designed to terminate high-speed transmission lines in computer and communications busses and memory circuits, the new devices are available as discrete chips (PFC HF series) and in ceramic ball-grid array (BGA) network packages (CHC series). The high-frequency resistors have been characterized using time domain techniques more familiar to digital engineers, in addition to the traditional analog/RF frequency domain measurements, said the company, and exhibit extremely low parasitic inductance and capacitance.
The PFC HF series resistors feature ultra-stable TaNFilm tantalum nitride thin-film elements on ceramic chips in 0603 and 0805 chip sizes, in 50-ohm (Ω) and 75Ω ratings with resistance tolerances to ±1%, and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCRs) values to ±25 ppm/°C. When subjected to a digital signal with a 100 ps rise time, signal reflection at the terminator is <10 percent. The operating temperature range is -55°C to 150°C. The resistors feature wraparound terminations, a non-leaching nickel barrier and an epoxy overcoat.
The CHC series resistor networks are packaged in BGAs on ceramic substrates with a variety of isolated or bussed termination schematics in either 1.0-mm pitch (3 x 9 or 4 x 9) or 0.65-mm pitch (2 x 5, 4 x 8, or 4 x 10) arrays. When subjected to a digital signal with a 100 ps rise time, the signal reflection at the CC0910B terminator is <2%. The TaNFilm tantalum nitride thin-film elements feature resistance values from 22Ω to 10 KΩ with tolerances to ±1% and TCRs to ±100 ppm. The operating temperature range for the BGA networks is -40°C to 85°C. Custom specifications are available.
Applications include termination circuits in high-speed routers and switches, as well as copper-to-fiber and fiber-to-copper data conversion circuits.
Typical pricing for the PFC-HF series starts at $0.45 each in quantities of 2,500. Delivery is six to eight weeks. The CHC series is priced at $1.06 each in quantities of 5,000. Delivery is eight to ten weeks.
