Sunnyvale, Calif. OmniVision Technologies Inc. has launched its first CMOS image sensor, in both color and black-and-white versions, specifically for the automotive market. The OV7940 is a new high-performance, highly-integrated analog CMOS image sensor based on OmniVision's proprietary OmniPixel technology, and meets the stringent specifications of the AEC-Q100. The company claims the optimized single-chip design will enable a module cost of less than $30.
The OV7940 is built to stringent, high-end specifications that meet the Automobile Electronics Council AEC-Q100 criteria encompassing a series of tests including, but not limited to, preconditioning, humidity, high-temperature cycle, mechanical, optical and electrical test parameters. For example, the device features a 48-pin quad flat pack (QFP) arrangement that attaches the sensor to the PC-board, enabling it to withstand severe vibration, and expansion and contraction in extreme temperatures. In addition, the OmniPixel technology design provides an extended operational temperature range of -40°C to 85°C and its high sensitivity makes it well suited for low light conditions.
The new CMOS image chip features a 1/3-in. lens format and a pixel size of 9.2 x 7.2 microns. It supports both NTSC (510 x 496) and PAL (628 x 586) outputs, and offers a sensitivity boost of +42 db. Dark current is rated at <5 mV/second at 60°C.
Other key features include automatic exposure/gain with 16 zone control, auto white balance control, aperture/Gamma correction, defective pixel correction, and self-diagnostics. It is also I2C bus programmable and provides a differential analog output and a serial control interface.
In addition to the color OV7940 chip, a black-and-white version, the OV7440, is also available. Both devices support the NTSC and PAL formats. These devices are available for sampling and are expected to be in volume production in third quarter 2005. Pricing for the OV7940 device is less than $14 in quantities of 10,000.
