Ismaning, GermanyEnabling remote test of cellphones, test-and-measurement house Willtek Communications GmbH introduces its new 4208 Off-Air Mobile Tester. The 4208 is a new member of the company's existing GSM-band 4200 Service Tester Series.
Priced at less than $17,000, the compact instrument, operating as an RF generator and analyzer, supports mobile phone tests over a short distance (a few meters) using built-in antennas. It's equipped with two rubber-ducky-style antennas that transmit and receive to/from the UUT (unit under test).
Production Line Testing
The company envisions its use for testing so-called infotainment systems in the automotive industry, particularly on production lines. The system can be used with handheld cellphones, as well as hands-free mobile set-ups, and mobile phones integrated into car radios.
It can be used, for example, for verifying the installation of mobile phones in cars and trucks while they're on vehicle production lines. These tests can help verify the radio and audio connections in an end-to-end test.
Willtek claims its new 4208 comes with a high receiver sensitivity of -54-dBm, and an increased output level of -24-dBm (compared to the 4200 Series instruments). These two features support measurements over the antenna rather than over a cable. Compared to the 4200 Series instruments, call processing functions have also been improved, for making tests under interference conditions.
Separate T/R Paths
By using separate N-type connectors for receive and transmit paths, an external amplifier can also be connected to the 4208. That can further increase its operating range (of course, you have to conform to RF radiation limits and avoid interference with local cellular networks; in order to avoid other mobile phones in the vicinity from locking onto a 4208's signal, you can restrict allowable phone numbers to a definable range so that other phones will be rejected).
The 4208 Off-Air Mobile Tester can also perform a power measurement while the phone is registering. This can be used to automatically test an antenna installation without manual intervention. You don't need to set up a call for this type of check.
The 4208 Off-Air Mobile Tester can also communicate with computers and other test gear across a built-in serial interface, operating at speeds from 4800-bits/s to 38.4-kbits/s. The 4208 also packs a printer interface, which should come in handy for generating brief test reports.
