Boston Cambridge Consultants has forged a set of development tools for its XAP3 royalty-free RISC processor core for ASICs and FPGAs. The tool set comprises the Gnu Compiler Collection (GCC) C/C++ compiler and the uCLinux and Micrium (C/OS-II real-time operating systems. In particular, the Gnu Compiler Collection imparts an industry standard C programming environment and support for C++ and Java.
Geared for embedded systems, the XAP3 is a soft core featuring a classic Von Neumann architecture that lets programmers mix code and data within a flat 4-Gbyte memory space. The core is available in Verilog RTL and can be fabricated with 50,000 gates to run at 100 MHz or as few as 40,000 gates for lower clock frequencies. It delivers a computational throughput of 0.88 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz (typical). The core includes hardware for position independent code, while priviledged modes prevent user programs from corrupting the operating system kernel.
Other tools available for the XAP3 core, including a complier, linker, simulator, debugger, and target hardware link, are included in the company's xIDE integrated programming and development environment. Developers can also benefit from a serial debugging logic and interface that allows noninvasive data acquisition and event monitoring for networked and remote debugging.
The tools are available with the purchase of an XAP3 license, under terms negotiated with the company. A single project license for XAP3 core is about $388,000. The core is available now for most applications, although delivery for some configurations, like those with a cache or interrupt controller or on-chip bus interface, may take a several weeks.
