Salt Lake City, UtahRemote video pickups, mobile video, and surveillance and security systems often demand inconspicuous electronics packages. If you're designing that kind of system, check out this miniature board from Parvus Corp. It's a small PC/104-Plus video compressor board with an on-board microcontroller to handle computationally-intensive video compression. The product's footprint measures just 3.55 x 3.775 inches.
The MPEG-4 video/audio encoder, which is PCI bus compatible, accommodates up to four simultaneous video inputs. Dubbed the MPEG104+, it's priced at about $600 a pop in volume quantities.
Compatible with realtime and embedded operating systems, such as Windows CE, WindowsXPe, QNX, Linux, and VxWorks, the board is suited for embedded computing applications with space constraints and harsh environmental conditions, such as high vibration and temperature extremes.
Four Camera Inputs
With dedicated hardware and rate-control algorithms tailored to high-resolution live video encoding, Parvus's MPEG104+ module supports up to four live camera inputs at a time, and enables a lower-end system processor or up to four MPEG104+ modules, to be used in a single system (supporting up to 16 cameras).
The MPEG104+ features 4-channel NTSC/PAL/SECAM-compatible video decoders with CVBS (composite video) inputs, along with digital (ITU-R BT.656) output and analog output channels to perform realtime monitoring of the recording sequence.
In use, the board can capture video in any of three modes: up to 30 frames/s on one camera at full screen, or up to 30 frames/s on two cameras at 1/2 screen, or up to 30 frames/s on four cameras at 1/4 screen. The board's analog video output channel performs realtime monitoring of the recording sequence. Finally, the board can capture a single frame from a live video input and store it within an SDRAM frame buffer.
The MPEG-4 module also features 4-channel motion detection, programmable or automatic static gain control for each CVBS channel, and programmable video quality control.
