Hauppauge, NY—Zetex Semiconductors' ZXBM1015 is a motor pre-driver IC for variable or fixed speed control of single-phase brushless DC fans, blowers and pumps. The chip, which delivers a PWM output suited to an (external) H-bridge that drives the motor windings, includes a current monitor that keeps the motor's start-up and stall current within OEM specifications. The ZXBM1015 will also put the motor drive outputs into a safe operating mode during a locked rotor condition to protect the H-bridge and motor windings.
Zetex says this IC is also the first of its kind to offer a configurable phase commutation delay (nominally 100 microseconds) to allow OEMs to meet the requirements of different motor sizes (external resistor required). The chip also features an adjustable minimum-speed setting that prevents the motor from running either too slowly or not being able to start. Also included is an automatic restart function.
The ZXBM1015 is compatible with thermistor and analog- voltage, as well as PWM control inputs. It also has a built-in Hall amplifier, and is compatible with any type of Hall-effect sensor to keep track of rotor speed and locked rotor conditions.
