Milpitas, Calif—Sipex Corporation says its SP6686 current-regulated buck/boost charge pump offers one of the smallest solutions in the industry for white-LED camera flash applications in cell phones. The chip's low equivalent output resistance facilitates the highest flash brightness of any comparable IC device, according to the company.
"The new SP6686 and the recently announced SP6685 are breakthrough products for high end and mainstream cell phone camera flash applications," said Kevin Plouse, senior vice president of marketing and business development.
Delivering up to 400 mA, the chip provides two independently adjustable and selectable output current levels for flash and torch modes. Operating at 2.4 MHz, the SP6686 needs only three tiny external capacitors (0.47, 1, and 2.2 microfarads), which reduces the footprint of the overall solution to the industry's lowest, says Sipex.
In operation, the IC, working from a 2.7- to 5.5-volt input, automatically transitions from the linear buck mode to the 2x boost mode based on the battery input voltage to ensure that current through the LED does not depend on the LED's forward voltage. Operating efficiency is 94 percent. The SP6686 features automatic soft-start mode to limit inrush current, and over-current, over-voltage and thermal-shutdown protection.
