Elkton, Md. Leveraging their respective expertise in cable and interconnect technologies, W. L. Gore & Associates Inc. and FCI have partnered to offer the next generation of high data rate digital interconnect solutions.
The new Gore cable assemblies leverage the advantages of FCI's AirMax VS high-speed connection system with Gore's expertise in cable assembly development. The new configuration utilizes the patented AirMax connector concept to provide excellent high-frequency performance without the use of elaborate shielding. Applications for the new solution include telecommunications, large scale computing, and automatic test equipment.
The new data link can provide an aggregate bandwidth of 1.0 terabit per second using only 50 linear millimeters of backplane space, according to David Gioconda, global data communications market segment leader for Gore.
The cable assembly consists of cable using Gore's expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) as the dielectric core. The helically wrapped ePTFE core ensures constant impedance throughout the length of the cables with excellent stability with temperature cycling or flexing, according to the company. Their smaller diameter and minimum bend radius is said to allow more signal lines per area and delivers consistently higher bandwidth performance than other comparable cable configurations.
The cables also exhibit low signal loss, low crosstalk, low skew as well as controlled capacitance and controlled impedance to provide the most open eye patterns available at this density. Available in differential or coaxial cable configurations, impedance is rated at 100Ω ±5Ω for differential and 60Ω nominal for single-ended configurations.
Plug compatible with FCI's AirMax VS connector system, the AirMax VS shieldless connectors are offered in multiple configurations that include 5-, 4- and 3-pair per column versions and in a variety of column counts including 10, 8 and 6. Click here for the datasheet.
