Ottawa, OntarioSiGe Semiconductor, Inc. announced that Broadcom Corporation has selected the SE2528L RangeCharger power amplifier for its 54g wireless LAN (WLAN) reference design. The cardbus reference design features a single-chip 802.11g transceiver and extends the range of 54g-based devices by up to 50 percent. The reference design is positioned to help manufacturers quickly and cost-effectively bring new 54g-based products to market.
The reference design inculdes the Broadcom BCM4318E single-chip 802.11g client solution which is optimized for receive sensitivity. With the reference deisgn, engineers can directly interface the BCM4318E with SiGe's SE2528L RangeCharger power amplifier (PA) to enhance wireless coverage. For instance, the PA features output power of +19 dBm at the antenna when operating in 802.11g mode, with an error vector magnitude of less than three percent. The high output power boosts signal strength to improve reliability of wireless transmission over longer distances.
The reference design includes all of the necessary hardware and software to build a 54g system. The PA is characterized for both +3.3 and +5-VDC operation, and includes an on-chip power enable switch, bias control circuitry, and a power detector that interfaces directly to the client solution.
The 802.11g client solution chip is a third-generation product that is optimized to reduce the size, cost and power consumption of a wireless LAN module and can power-down to consume as little as 9mW in idle mode.
