Eugene, OregonBoard maker VersaLogic Corp. announces a new embedded computer to add to its existing line of PC/104-Plus form-factor board-level products. Significantly, VersaLogic's new Lynx board features a high reliability design that dissipates less than 5-W total. It runs an AMD Elan SC520 microprocessor, which is an x86-compatible (486-class) chip.
The system's PC/104-Plus interface supports both ISA and PCI add-on modules. Standard pass-through connectors let you stack the board either above or below other PC/104 modules. It can also be used as a CPU module for larger system, by plugging it into a proprietary baseboard that includes specific user I/O circuitry.
A High-Temp Version
The Lynx is also available in both commercial temperature and extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) versions. As such, it should prove useful to designers of medical, avionics, security, and defense systems. Since the Lynx doesn't include on-board video circuitry, it's applicable to headless applications in process monitoring, data acquisition, communications routing, or safety monitoring of critical systems. What's more, it has a very small footprint, measuring just 3.55 x 3.775-in. in size.
Features include 64-Mbytes of soldered-ion SDRAM, four serial COM ports, and Ethernet, IDE, and parallel LPT interfaces. The Lynx also packs two counter/timers, a floppy interface, and keyboard/mouse ports.
Operating System Support
As with other VersaLogic embedded computer boards, the Lynx includes a customizable OEM-enhanced BIOS that's field-upgradeable. It's designed to work with embedded OS (operating systems), including Windows CE, Linux, VxWorks, QNX, DOS, and other realtime OSs.
Currently available from stock, the Lynx is priced at about $400 a pop in OEM quantities. Unfortunately, this product is so new that the company hasn't made data sheets available for it yet on its Web site.
