Ottawa, OntarioSiGe Semiconductor, Inc. expanded its RangeCharger product line with a trio of RF front-end modules that allow manufacturers to optimize the performance, battery life and transmission range required of a full complement of emerging Wi-Fi applications.
The new RF front-end modules address an increasingly segmented Wi-Fi market, and for the first time, allow manufacturers to easily adapt designs to meet the specific requirements of embedded applications, PC cards or access points. The SE2521A40 delivers the efficiency and low power consumption required of embedded applications, including Wi-Fi VoIP phones; the SE2521A60 provides the balance of performance and low current consumption ideal for PC client cards; and the SE2521A80 ensures high output power to boost the transmission range of Wi-Fi routers and access points.
"The popularity of Wi-Fi is driving a segmentation of the market that makes it harder for manufacturers to optimize products for the required transmission range, efficiency and battery life," said Andrew Parolin, director of wireless data products at SiGe Semiconductor, Inc. In contrast, SiGe's new RF front-end modules are the first to deliver the flexibility to more closely match the requirements of specific applications, while pin-to-pin compatibility offers a fast and efficient route to market."
SiGe Semiconductor has adapted its proven, highly integrated 2.4-GHz RF front-end architecture to support a diverse set of high data rate, 54Mbits/s WLAN applications. Each device incorporates a linear power amplifier, power detector, transmit-receive switch, and associated matching circuitry in a small package measuring just 8mm x 7mm x 1.1mm. The SE2521A40, SE2521A60, and SE2521A80 RF front-end modules each provide a complete interface between the output of the transceiver and the antenna, thereby easing design and manufacture, and reducing both the bill of materials and overall system cost.
SiGe Semiconductor's new RF front-end modules are pin-to-pin compatible with the SE2521A34, SiGe's previous 802.11g RF front-end module that has been integrated into laptops, PC Cards and other Wi-Fi devices from some of the world's leading OEMs. Pin-to-pin compatibility allows customers to easily adapt their existing designs to optimize performance, battery life and transmission range of next-generation systems.
The SE2521A40 is ideal for embedded WLAN systems, capable of +18dBm output power with an error vector magnitude (EVM) of less than three percent while operating in 802.11g mode, or +22dBm in 802.11b mode while meeting all ACPR requirements. The front-end module achieves this performance while minimizing current consumption to 150 mA in 802.11g mode. This allows VoIP capability to be added to mobile phones without impacting battery life.
The SE2521A60 provides an optimal balance of performance and power efficiency, allowing PC Cards to maintain transmission over longer distances while maximizing battery life. The device is capable of +19dBm output power with an EVM of less than three percent while operating in 802.11g mode, or +23dBm in 802.11b mode while meeting all ACPR requirements. The SE2521A60 consumes just 195mA in 802.11g mode.
The SE2521A80 is optimized for routers and access points, featuring high output power of +20dBm with an EVM of less than three percent while operating in 802.11g mode, or +20dBm in 802.11b mode while meeting all ACPR requirements. The high output power boosts signal strength for reliable transmission over longer distances.
Each device also integrates a power detector with 20dB of dynamic range, and a digital enable control for transmitter on/off control. The power detector boosts performance by minimizing mismatch to only 1.5 dB of variation over a 2:1 antenna mismatch.
All three devices are sampling now, with production scheduled for Q3 2005. The SE2521A40, SE2521A60, and SE2521A80 are priced at approximately $1.95 each in 10,000-piece quantities.
