Bridgewater, N.J. The new S9684 series of photo ICs from Hamamatsu Corp. combines high sensitivity and high speed in a compact package for laser beam detection applications such as print start timers for laser printers, digital copiers, and fax machines.
Utilizing a dual-element silicon (Si) PIN photodiode, the S9684 series achieves a highly stable digital output, even when laser power or ambient temperature fluctuates, by comparing the two signals from the dual-element Si PIN photodiode. Housed in a 3 (D) x 1.3 (H) x 4-mm (W) package, the surface-mount devices are suitable for lead-free solder reflow processes.
Both photo ICs in the series feature high sensitivity that is achieved by using a current amplifier with two gain levels. The S9684 provides a 20-time gain and has an active area of 2.5 x 0.5 mm, while the S9684-01 offers a 6-time gain and an active area of 2.5 x 0.3 mm.
Both devices provide maximum rise and fall times of 5 ns and a maximum propagation delay time variation of ±5 ns. Current consumption is 4 mA. The standard operating temperature range is -25° to 80°C.
The S9684 is priced at $2.91 in small quantities. Delivery is five to six weeks.
