Milpitas, Calif.—Billed as a complete stand alone linear charger in a 2-by-2 mm DFN, Linear Technology's LTC4065 and LTC4065A can deliver up to 750 mA for single-cell lithium-ion batteries and applications in digital still cameras, portable point-of-sale and diagnostic equipment, cell phones, PDAs and USB-equipped handheld devices.
These ICs offer timer termination, recharge, trickle charge, and C/10 detection. A complete solution requires only two discrete components (input capacitor and resistor for programming the charge current). The chip's patented thermal regulation scheme prevents the device's junction temperature from exceeding +115°C by reducing charge current during high power or high ambient temperature operation.
Other features include a charge current monitor output for charge termination, float voltage (4.2 V) accurate to 0.5 percent, and 5 percent charge accuracy. During shutdown, the supply current is just 30 microamps and battery drain current (i.e., when wall adapter or USB supply input is removed) is less than 1 microamp. The LTC4065A, working from inputs up to 5.5 volts, also features an open drain "AC Present" status to indicate the presence of an input supply such as a wall adapter. The LTC4065EDC and LTC4065AEDC are rated for operation from -40 to +85°C.
