Schaumburg, Ill. Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. has unveiled two significant performance improvements with the launch of its expanding series of high-frequency multi-layer chip inductors. The new HK series is said to offer the industry's first high-inductance 100 nH-rated chip inductor in a tiny 0201 case size, while the new high-Q HKQ series, also housed in a 0201 package, touts 30 percent higher Quality (Q) values than previous series devices, relative to case size.
Developed to meet the industry's demand for smaller, more feature-rich portable devices, the new 100 nH device is said to provide nearly 79% higher inductance than the industry's previous top-rated 0201 chip with an inductance of 56 nH, also developed by Taiyo Yuden. The company said it was able to achieve the high inductance values in the small case size by developing a finer grade dielectric power, thinning each individual inductive layer, and improving its internal conductor patterning technology.
The company said these developments will drive higher-density PC-board mounting and smaller end devices by significantly reducing the size of critical noise-suppression components in cell phone RF circuits, power amplifiers, voltage-controlled oscillators and other choke coil applications. This will also allow designers to downsize the majority of existing 0402 and larger devices used in choke coil applications, which will provide minimum circuit board real estate savings of 64% in area and 78% in volume per component, according to the company.
The high-inductance HK chip inductor series currently provides a wide inductance range of 1 nH (250 mA) to 100 nH (40 mA). The latest additions to the high-inductance series include the HK060368N device with an inductance rating of 68 nH and rated current of 50 mA, the HK060382N with an inductance value of 82 nH and rated current of 50 mA, and the HK0603R10 with an inductance rating of 100 nH and rated current of 40 mA, all in 0201 case sizes.
The high-Q HKQ series chip inductors, also packaged in 0201 case size, provide a 30% higher Q value, relative to case size, than comparably rated devices in 0402 packages. These devices offer an inductance value range from 1 nH (250 mA) to 10 nH (150 mA).
All HK and HKQ series devices provide non-polarized electrodes that allow mounting in any orientation on the circuit board. Production capacity for both HK and HKQ series components is now at 100 million units per month.
