Malvern, PA Vishay Intertechnology Incorporated has introduced two small form (SC-70) 150-mA, low-noise, low-dropout (LDO) regulators for portable devices, including cell phones, PDAs, pagers, digital cameras, MP3 players and modems.
Measuring 2mm x 2mm, the five-pin SiP21101 and SiP21102 feature a dropout voltage of 130 mV and a ground current of 110 microamps. These devices are designed specifically to prolong battery life in low-voltage portable electronic systems while limiting noise. The LDOs regulate voltage while delivering 300-mA peak current with fast start-up times of 50 microseconds for systems that have a high turn-on surge current. Fifteen fixed output voltage options are available, ranging from 1.2 V to 5.0 V.
The devices use an active pull-down circuit to limit the output voltage, discharging automatically through a 100-ohm n-channel MOSFET when the device is put in shutdown mode.
The LDOs include reverse battery protection at 1 microamp as well as short circuit and thermal protection.
The SiP21101 limits noise through an external noise bypass capacitor connected to its BP pin that reduces noise to only 30 microvolts; the same pin on the SiP21102, which has a noise output of 75 microvolts, functions as an error flag output that goes low when the output voltage drops 4% below its normal voltage.
The SiP21101 and SiP21102 cost $0.40 in 1,000-piece quantities. Click here for the data sheet.
