Sunnyvale, Calif—Supertex' HV9931, an off-line driver for single high-brightness LEDs, includes a power factor correction stage that thus suits the chip to traffic signal, street lamp and decorative lighting applications. The fixed-frequency buckboost-buck design features built-in dimming capability.
The chip, with an internal 450-V regulator design that allows the device to work off a universal AC input without the need for an input power transformer, cascades an input PFC buck-boost stage and an output buck converter power stage. The HV9931, using hysteretic peak-current control to regulate both input and output current, thus eliminates the need for loop compensation and is inherently protected from input under-voltage conditions. The chip provides a low-frequency PWM dimming input that accepts an external control signal (duty cycle 0-100 percent at up to several kilohertz).
