Santa Clara, Calif.—National Semiconductor's LM2716 buck-boost and LM2717 buck-buck, two regulators designed for high-current applications, feature greater than 90 percent efficiency over a wide load range for extended battery life in embedded computer systems, set-top boxes, portable Internet access devices, general point-of-load architectures, and monitors and TVs, including TFT/LCD flat-panel displays. They are suited for applications where multiple high-current, low-voltage power supplies are needed to power such devices as FPGAs, DSPs, and ASICs.
"The use of distributed power architectures with adjustable output voltages has become increasingly popular for powering digital ASICs and DSPs," said Yoon Paek, marketing director for the company's Portable Power Products Group. "National's new buck-boost and buck-buck converters provide exceptionally flexible and high-performance solutions for these point-of-load architectures."
The LM2716 comprises two pulse width modulation (PWM) DC/DC stages. Its buck (step-down) stage is used to generate a fixed output voltage. A boost (step-up) stage is used to generate an adjustable output voltage. The LM2717 comprises two PWM DC/DC buck stages. External soft-start for each converter limits input surge current at start-up, and independent shutdown allows users to disable each regulator separately.
Both converters feature low-RDS switches (160 milliohms and 12 milliohms in the LM2716's two stages, and 160 milliohms in both stages of the LM2717) for maximum efficiency. Designers can adjust operating frequency between 300 kHz and 600 kHz, allowing the use of small external components.
Both devices are packaged in a low profile, 24-pin TSSOP. The product datasheets can be accessed by clicking here for the LM2716, and here for the LM2717. To order the LM2716 and LM2717 evaluation boards, click here, and here, respectively.
The LM2716 and LM2717 are available now. They're priced at $2.40 and $2.45 each, respectively, both in 1k quantities. Lead-free package options are also available.
