Sunnyvale, Calif.—Advanced Analogic Technologies' AAT3687 BatteryManager, for single-cell lithium-ion/polymer batteries, is designed to further cut external parts count in portable consumer applications.
"In today’s extremely competitive portable consumer products market, higher component counts translate directly into more PCB area and can quickly kill a new product," said Kin Shum, strategic marketing director. "By integrating these primary charging functions into a single compact package and requiring a minimum number of external components, the AAT3687 helps free up valuable board space."
The IC, which includes highly integrated charging circuitry, a reverse blocking diode, and a current sensor in a 3-by-3 mm TDFN package, delivers up to 1.5 amps across an input voltage range of 4 to 5.5 volts. Multiple built-in intelligent functions maximize charging efficiency and protect the integrity of the charging device, the control system, and the battery under charge. The chip's active thermal loop maintains a constant-current output in the fast-charge condition over its operating temperature and voltage range, and allows the charger to operate to its limits for a given thermal state. Otherwise, the chip adjusts charge current, rather than turning the charger off (unless in case of thermal failure), as conditions dictate.
The chip also contains circuitry to shut down under over-voltage conditions. Status pins, which drive two external LEDs, facilitate battery charge monitoring. The device can also report up to twelve different charging status states to a microcontroller through an embedded serial interface.
The AAT3687 can detect the presence of an AC adapter and provides automatic recharge sequencing. Soft-start circuitry prevents excessive inrush current during start-up. Sleep mode current is just 2 microamps (typical) to extend system standby time.
