Hauppauge, N.Y. The USB3450 UTMI+ standalone device/host transceiver from Standard Microsystems Corp. (SMSC) has passed Hi-Speed USB compliance testing with the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).
The USB3450 physical layer transceiver (PHY) provides the highest level of UTMI+ support (Level 3). The USB3450's interoperability capabilities have been proven through testing with several Hi-Speed USB host IP providers, the company said.
Consumer electronics developers are adding host support to portable products, such as MP3 players, PDAs and cell-phones. The USB3450 is designed to the UTMI+ interface standard to support existing ASIC or SoC devices.
With a footprint of 6-mm X 6-mm, the USB3450 allows designers to add low-power host support without sacrificing board space.
“Many of our customers have been asking for a Hi-Speed USB PHY that adds the required host signals to a baseline 8-bit UTMI device PHY,” said Steve Nelson, vice president of marketing, connectivity solutions, in a statement. “SMSC now provides a solution with the industry’s smallest footprint UTMI+ device/host PHY.”
The UTMI+ standard defines the interface for transceiver macrocells that are created by chip and IP vendors and placed by ASIC and component manufacturers in mobile devices to directly communicate with each other without requiring a host PC.
Different UTMI+ levels allow ASIC design with the required complexity level and without unused logic. Level 3 adds support for using USB 2.0 full-speed hubs in mobile communications systems. It enables the host controller to communicate with low-speed devices that are connected to a USB full-speed hub controller.
In May, SMSC introduced the USB3500 UTMI+ standalone, host or On-the-Go (OTG) transceiver that also supports Level 3 in the UTMI+ standard. And in August, the company announced its support of the newly released UTMI+ low-pin interface (ULPI) industry specification through its USB3300 ULPI standalone peripheral, embedded host or OTG transceiver.
The USB3450 is available in a 40-pin QFN package. Qualification sample and production quantities are available. In 10,000-unit quantities, the USB3450 costs $2 per unit.
