Milpitas, Calif.—Linear Technology's LT3486 is a dual step-up DC/DC regulator that's designed to drive up to 16 white LEDs (8 LEDs in series per channel). The constant-current source delivers up to 1.3 amps for applications from lithium-ion powered handheld devices to automotive backlighting applications.
The chip's PWM driver facilitates a wide (1000:1) dimming range. The LT3486's high-efficiency, current- mode and fixed-frequency operation (adjustable from 200 kHz to 2 MHz using a single resistor) is designed to deliver uniform LED brightness and ensure low noise and maximum battery life. The LT3486's two independent converters can drive asymmetric LED strings (up to 8 in a series per converter) from an input voltage of 2.5 to 24 volts. Operating efficiency is as high as 85 percent.
