Richardson, TexasReflecting the trend of increased multimedia applications in 3G (third generation) mobile devices, Anritsu Company is rolling out an enhanced version of its existing MD8470A signaling tester. The enhancement permits the signaling application tester to perform MMS (multimedia messaging service) transmission/reception tests, as well as increased SMS (short message service) and video call test analysis.
The expanded MD8470A test capability addresses the need created by increased consumer use of MMS, letting you reduce development and test cycle time for new mobile communications applications. To achieve the increased testing ability, Anritsu enhanced its MD8470A's built-in WNS Wireless Network Simulator.
The WNS simulates a realworld mobile network in a production environment. With the WNS, the MD8470A acts as both a base station simulator and applications server, providing advanced call processing features.
Also, by seamlessly covering the entire 400-MHz through 2.7-GHz range, the MD8470A can support frequency expansion that future systems will require. The MD8470A is priced beginning at about $24,600.
Internal Or External Servers
For MMS analysis, the MD8470A can be used with an internal or external MMS server to perform MMS transmission and reception tests. For SMS testing, the expanded capability includes support for Unicode and binary text formats, in addition to the 7-bit ASCII format.
Additional MD8470A test capabilities include video call loopback tests for video call analysis, and service interruption tests, such as an incoming voice/video call during a packet call, or SMS/MMS reception during voice, packet, or video calls.
The MD8470A's simulation functions include decoding displays of protocol messages, protocol messaging between mobile phones and the tester, and realtime user data logging. Simulations are performed on an internal PC running Windows XP.

The built-in PC not only simplifies setting up and conducting measurements, but also saves space. An internal application server also simplifies application functional testing, and an external server can also be used. Previously, both an external server and a control PC were required to perform similar tests.
No Need To Share
The low cost MD8470A platform also conserves space, measuring about 17 x 9 x 11-in. It also comes in weighing just 37-lbs. This size and weight, as well as the product's favorable less-than-$25,000 price tag, means development engineers in your organization can likely have dedicated application testers at their individual workspaces, rather than having to share test systems.
