Melville, N.Y.ZMD AG has introduced the SAP5 universal actuator-sensor interface (AS-i) chip that is designed to provide industrial automation systems with safety features.
The SAP5 features synchronous data I/O mode; 4-input/4-output operation in extended address mode; user write protection for extended ID Code 1; and a multiplexed parameter port to configure to slave.
The SAP5 is certified according to the AS-I specification 3.0. Configurable LED outputs support all status indication modes of the specification V3.0. The AS-I is a low-level field bus system for applications in industrial automation. Designed to interconnect sensors, actuators and switches, the AS-I bus uses a two-wire yellow unshielded cable to transport both power and information.
The SAP5 is designed to reduce development time, board space, component costs and system start-up time by using an integrated code generator instead of an external microcontroller for storage and administration of safety sequences. An internal electronic inductor delivers a current drive capability of 55-mA.

The SAP5 supports 5.33-MHz and 16-MHz crystals by automatic frequency detection. It also includes a clock watchdog for high-system security.
Available now in volume production, the SAP5 is housed in either an SOP20 or SOP16 ‘green’ plastic package with lead-free terminals. Unit price is $6.80 in low volumes.
