Malvern, Pa. Featuring ultra-low resistance values down to 0.2 milliohms, two new surface-mount Power Metal Strip resistors from Vishay Intertechnology Inc. offers power ratings of 3.0 W and 5.0 W for all types of current sensing, voltage division and pulse applications.
The new Vishay Dale WSL3921 and WSL5931 Power Metal Strip resistors are suitable for applications in switching and linear power supplies, instruments, power amplifiers in automotive electronic controls, battery-charging systems and motor controls in consumer products, as well as motor controls in industrial systems. Due to a proprietary processing technique, the resistors provide low resistance values ranging from 0.2 mΩ to 4.0 mΩ with tight tolerances of 1.0% and 5.0%. Both devices feature a solid metal nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy resistive element.
The new WSL3921 resistor measures 0.394 x 0.205 in. (10.0 x 5.2 mm) with a maximum height profile of 0.071 in. (1.80 mm). Rated at 3 watts, the WSL3921 resistors are available in resistance values of 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mΩ. Rated at 5 watts, the WSL5931 resistor measures 0.591 x 0.305 in. (15.0 x 7.75 mm) with a height profile of 0.068 in. (1.73 mm), and offers resistance values of 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 mΩ
What does the accuracy and low resistance values mean to designers? It enables them to use less-expensive ICs and help end systems operate at maximum performance, according to the company. Designers can also use a single low-value resistor in place of multiple high-value resistors running in parallel.
Like all Power Metal Strip resistors, the new WSL3921 and WSL5931 devices feature an all-welded construction that contributes to their superior electrical performance, said the company. They also provide very low inductance of 0.5 nH to 5 nH, excellent frequency response, and low thermal EMF. Other features include good overload capability, using the printed-circuit-board as a cooling device, and long-term stability through a broad range of environmental conditions, according to the company.
Available in tape-and-reel packaging, pricing for the WSL resistors starts at $0.36 each in quantities of 10,000 for U.S. delivery. Samples and production quantities are available now, with a lead time of four to six weeks for larger orders.
