Salt Lake City, UtahDesigned for high-rel and mobile embedded applications where digital video recording is needed, such as surveillance and security, board supplier Parvus Corp. now has a new PC/104-Plus module dubbed the CTR-1471. It's a J2K (JPEG-2000) encoder that comprises an eight-channel video compressor supporting the enhanced features and quality provided by J2K's ISO/IEC15444-1 wavelet-based image compression standard.
For mobile apps, it lends itself for use with Windows CE and Linux operating systems, although it can also be used under Windows XP and Windows XP Embedded.
Up To Eight Cameras
The CTR-1471's eight NTSC/PAL/SECAM-compatible analog video input channels can accommodate up to eight cameras.
Designed to withstand extreme temperature operation (you can get a -40°C to +85°C version; a standard version spans 0°C to +60°C) and high mechanical stress, the CTR-1471 is for air, bus, train, and vehicular video applications, including networked/wireless video and image distribution systems and digital CCTV (closed circuit television). The compact module has a 3.55 x 3.775-in. footprint.
Offloading Your CPU
The high reliability PC/104-Plus board not only implements the computationally-intensive operations of J2K image compression, but also provides compliant code stream generation for applications that support realtime video encoding. As such, it contains a dedicated wavelet transform engine. It also packs three entropy CODECs (coder-decoder), an onboard memory sub-system, and dual embedded RISC processors that offload compression overhead from your system CPU.
The CTR-1471 board is able to process images at a rate of 40-Msamples/s in reversible mode, and at higher rates when used in irreversible mode. NTSC compression rates are 352 x 240-pixels at 120-fps (frames/s), and 720 x 480-pixels at 30-fps. PAL compression rates are 352 x 288 at 100-fps and 720 x 576 at 25-fps.
Features include programmable picture size, position, panning, tilting, freezing, image scaling, and zooming. You can also use the system for motion detection, with independent detection for each video channel. Velocity and motion sensitivity are programmable. Finally, the module packs 16 lines of general purpose digital I/O.
Price And Availability
The CTR-1471 is priced from about $765 each in quantities of 100 or more. The module is also available inside of Parvus's new AlphaDVR system. As the name implies, the AlphaDVR is a configurable embedded platform designed for DVR (digital video recorder) and general processing applications. It's also intended for demanding mobile environments.
Parvus also offers a 4-channel PC/104-Plus MPEG-4 encoder card. It's also designed for similar applications as the CTR-1471, and is available in the AlphaDVR system as well.
