Santa Clara, Calif.National Semiconductor Corp.’s latest high-speed, low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) serializer/deserializer (SerDes) chipset can serialize 24 bits of data over a single differential pair in flat-panel display applications.
In 800 X 480 resolution liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the DS90C241 serializer and the DS90C124 deserializer can achieve the same level of image quality with just two wires compared with previous generations of LVDS interfaces that required eight wires.
"The 2-wire interface can reduce the number of cables by more than 90% and also decreases PCB layers, connector size, and pin count," said Dac Tran, applications engineer for National's Flat Panel Displays Division.
With fewer cables, connectors and simplified engineering, the DS90C241/124 chipset cut overall costs by more than 50% compared to previous generation LVDS chipsets, according to Tran.
The DS90C241/124 chipset is suitable for applications such as automotive navigation and rear seat infotainment, in-flight entertainment systems, surveillance systems, remote display applications, CMOS/CCD imagers, point-of-sale (POS) terminals and automatic teller machines.
The chipset features AC coupling support, DC balance and pre-emphasis that will support up to 10 meters of cabling length. It can also convert 24 bits of data over a single LVDS differential pair with an embedded clock.
"The DS90C241/124 utilizes a LVDS serial stream with embedded clock information, which eliminates skew issues between parallel data and clock paths. National’s random data lock eliminates the need of reference clock on the receiver. This in turn provides a low power and low noise environment for reliably transferring data over a serial transmission path to achieve high quality resolutions on flat panel display applications," Tran said.
The DS90C241/124 chipset has a frequency of 5 to 35-MHz, which supports a wide variety of LCD panel resolutions. It also offers a data payload of 24:1 serialization and 840-Mbits/s of bandwidth.
Samples of the DS90C241 and D90C124 are available now to select customers with production quantities available in March 2006. The products are priced at $6 in 1,000-unit quantities and offered in a 48-pin, 7-mm X 7-mm X 1-mm TQFP package.
